I will never understand why, despite the fact that DNS works perfectly fine, all my Debian Stretch installs show IP addresses everywhere. The last login IP, finger, w, last etc. Like I'm missing something really obvious

@x00 DNS names are not permanent and can be subject to change or ambiguous (DNS round robin setups). IPs are more accurate. So logging IPs seems like a wanted thing...

@sunweaver well I'd be super concerned if IP addresses weren't logged at all. It's more that I don't understand why IP addresses, and not hostnames, are the default such as in the last connection info when I login. Especially with IPv6 addresses being harder to remember.
